Supatirada (Jane) Wongchanla, D.V.M., Ph.D. candidate in Animal Biology Graduate Group, University of California, Davis, USA
My journey in veterinary medicine has profoundly enriched my understanding of animal health and management. In my third year, courses in Animal Disease Development and Nutritional Balance ignited my interest in animal nutrition. Post-graduation, I worked as a technical product advisor for the Smart Vet Group in Thailand, focusing on innovative products like ZnO nanoparticles, Copper ion nanoparticles, Chito-oligosaccharides, living yeast, and inulin to enhance farm animal performance.
I tackled antimicrobial drug resistance caused by improper antibiotic use in agricultural industries, steering my research towards feed additives as antibiotic alternatives in monogastric animals. My goal is to improve health and reduce antimicrobial resistance while enhancing livestock growth and production performance. This vision aims to elevate animal husbandry standards globally and increase profitability for stakeholders in the pig industry.
Driven to broaden my scientific understanding of animal feeding, I joined the Animal Biology Graduate Group at UC Davis. The university's outstanding research and renowned faculty provide an ideal setting for investigating novel nutraceuticals and diets as substitutes for antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines. As a Ph.D. student, my research focuses on functional amino acids as nutraceuticals to mitigate post-weaning diarrhea in piglets.
Upon graduation, I aspire to work as a researcher, offering farmers insightful guidance on animal nutrition. My combined knowledge and experience uniquely position me to contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural animal industry and promote global animal health.
