Sr. Technical Expert, Swine
DSM-Firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health
Marshall, Missouri
Dr. Bergstrom enjoyed spending time during his childhood at his grandparents’ and uncle’s farms near Marcus and Cherokee, Iowa. An appreciation for a family history of land stewardship and animal husbandry contributed to the passion for a life of service in agriculture. He earned a B.S. in Agricultural Studies/Farm Operations with a Minor in Agronomy from Iowa State University in 1992. After working on a swine farm in Missouri, he attended graduate school at Kansas State University, where he earned an M.S. in Swine Nutrition in 1996. Since that time, he briefly worked as a Swine Research Coordinator for Seaboard Farms before becoming a Swine Nutritionist/Consultant at Kerber Milling Company for nearly 9 years in Iowa. Dr. Bergstrom also served and completed a combined total of 13 active years in the United States Marine Corp Reserves and Army Reserves before returning to Kansas State University in Nov. 2006. While at Kansas State University, he managed the Swine Research Lab while pursuing a Ph.D. in Swine Nutrition, which he completed in July 2011. His Ph.D. research included: the association of sow and litter characteristics with piglet birth weight and subsequent growth performance and survivability, the effects of feeder design and management on growing-finishing pig performance, the effects of dietary astaxanthin and ractopamine HCl on finishing pig growth and pork color shelf-life, and meta-analyses describing the variables that influence the backfat, belly fat, and jowl fat iodine values of pork carcasses. Dr. Bergstrom currently works for dsm-firmenich, Animal Nutrition & Health, North America as a Sr. Technical Support Manager for their swine nutritional solutions, which includes vitamins, enzymes, and eubiotics.
